Stimp Speed

MEASURING THE SPEED OF A GOLF GREEN

  1. A stimpmeter bar is used to assess the speed of the golf green.
  2. A golf ball is placed in the notch near the end of the bar.
  3. The bar is gradually tilted upwards, to about 20 degrees, when the ball will roll forward.
  4. The distance rolled is recorded, with 3 measurements being taken in one direction and then another 3 measurements in the opposite direction.
  5. The 6 readings are averaged and this is the stimp speed of the green.

Stimp meter speeds of professional greens
range from 9 - 12.

The higher the rating, the faster the green.
